Charter school awaits approval to expand

The Timothy L. Johnson Academy in Fort Wayne has asked Ball State University for permission to expand and add sixth grade. The school serves students in grades K-5 now.

The school used to offer grades 6-8 but Ball State closed the middle school due to poor test scores two years ago.

It is not known when Ball State, as the academy’s authorizer, might approve the school’s request to expand. School officials hoped to have grade six available for this upcoming school year but may push that back if needed.

Space also is an issue as the current facility is not big enough to add another grade. Options include buying portable classrooms, expanding its current space or finding a new, bigger facility.

The school’s board is expected to decide by August.
